Water Wise Decisions

Our region is in a dire water shortage crisis.

The crisis is due to the ripple effects of the longest and hottest El Niño on record which has effected our region since 2015.

Today our regional water storage dams are less than 1/4 of usable water, at the start of our long and dry summer season! This has called for region wide water restrictions to be put in place to prohibit the use of potable water for anything other than basic sanitation.

For this reason, Yachtport has proactively decided to install a new rainwater collection system at our premises.

The two water tanks will be able to hold up to 20,000 Liters of rainwater for the use of boat works and boat washing on site. With this method the essential boat services can continue but without jeopardizing our own community.

We encourage you to be water wise.

El Niño?

An El Niño means The Little Boy, or Christ Child in Spanish. El Niño was originally recognized by fishermen off the coast of South America in the 1600s, with the appearance of unusually warm water in the Pacific Ocean. The name was chosen based on the time of year (around December) during which these warm waters events tended to occur.

The term El Niño refers to the large-scale ocean-atmosphere climate interaction linked to a periodic warming in sea surface temperatures across the central and east-central Equatorial Pacific.

Typical El Niño effects are likely to develop over North America during the upcoming winter season. The presence of El Niño can significantly influence weather patterns, ocean conditions, and marine fisheries across large portions of the globe for an extended period of time.

The opposite of El Niño is La Niña.

La Niña means The Little Girl in Spanish. La Niña is also sometimes called El Viejoanti-El Niño, or simply "a cold event."

La Niña episodes represent periods of below-average sea surface temperatures across the east-central Equatorial Pacific. Global climate La Niña impacts tend to be opposite those of El Niño impacts. In the tropics, ocean temperature variations in La Niña also tend to be opposite those of El Niño.

During a La Niña year, winter temperatures are warmer than normal in the Southeast and cooler than normal in the Northwest. - Words by NOAA

Job Well Done

One of our latest repairs projects was on Samsara, a Princess V58 Motor Yacht.

Works entailed the re-spray of the hull's dark blue band with Awlgrip, fitment of underwater lights, Gelcoat repairs, electrical works, bottom works, windshield repairs, buff & polish of superstructure, polish of brightwork and complete valet clean.

The newly applied Awlgrip paint has certainly brought the shine back for her and will be for enjoyment for all to see her in person.

Blue Flag Status 2017-2018

We are proud to once again announce that we were awarded, the internationally recognized Blue Flag Status for the 2017-2018 season.

The Blue Flag works towards sustainable development of beaches and marinas through strict criteria dealing with Water Quality, Environmental Education and Information, Environmental Management, and Safety and Other Services.

The Blue Flag Programme is owned and run by the non-government, non-profit organisation the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE).

Come and visit Yachtport SA, to see what a Blue flag marina is all about

About Blue Flag:

The Blue Flag Programme, now in its 30th year, is focused on the conservation of marine and coastal habitats, and is designed to raise environmental education and awareness, and increase sound environmental practices among tourists, local populations and beach management.

To achieve Blue Flag status, as many as 33 different criteria spanning over four aspects of coastal management must be met and maintained:  water quality, environmental education and information, environmental management, safety and services.  Each Blue Flag site is compelled to conduct several environmental education activities during the year, and to practise effective and efficient conservation management.

In South Africa, the Blue Flag programme is managed by WESSA and participating coastal municipalities. In the Southern Hemisphere, the Blue Flag season runs from 1 November to 31 October each year.

Seagull becomes Mascot

Yachtport has had for the past year an unofficial Mascot - a flightless juvenile Seagull.

This bird must of at a very young age hurt it's own wing and never taken flight. For this, the bird was frequently seen walking around Yachtport - instead of flying.

It appeared as if the bird's parents were bringing it food and allowed the bird to survive. The progress of the rehabilitation of the bird was followed by our Staff over the months.

Recently, the bird has vacated Yachtport for the first time and made a home at the nearby fishing factory. We therefore wish this bird farewell and will miss it's company.
